A new Holistic Market is set to open at Matakana Hall this spring, offering visitors an alternative shopping and wellbeing experience alongside the ever-popular Farmers Market.
Organised by local astrologer and former social worker Mike Kirk, the market will launch on Saturday, October 18, followed by dates on November 15 and three Saturdays leading up to Christmas.
Kirk, who has been giving astrological readings for 35 years and holds a diploma from the Faculty of Astrological Studies in London, says the market is designed to offer “something a bit different” in a professional and welcoming environment.
“The format of holistic markets needs refreshing,” he says.
“Presentation, professionalism and promotion are key.”
The “Insight” Market will feature three main elements: alternative health practitioners such as reiki, acupuncture, reflexology and colour therapy; readers who will give insight through astrology, tarot, palmistry and mediumship; and quality retail stalls offering health, wellbeing and artisan products.
Kirk says stallholder fees will be kept deliberately low for the first six months to support practitioners and small businesses during tough economic times.
“Markets can be disheartening for newcomers if they don’t see results straight away. By lowering the barrier to entry, we can encourage more people to give it a go and help the market grow.”
He chose Matakana Hall for its central location and availability on Saturdays, when large numbers already visit the village. Unlike food-focused stalls outside, the Holistic Market will provide an indoor space showcasing complementary services and products.
If successful, Kirk hopes to expand the market to run two or three times a month throughout summer.
