Printmaking will take centre stage at Estuary Arts Centre this month with the exhibition Pressing Matters – Printmaking in Focus.
Running throughout March, the exhibition features more than 150 works by contemporary printmakers from around New Zealand, showcasing a wide range of printmaking techniques and styles. Entry to the exhibition is free.
Visitors will also be able to see artists at work during a daily pop-up print lab, where local printmakers will demonstrate their craft and answer questions from the public.
A free whānau print open day will be held on Saturday, March 14 from 10am to 2.30pm. Families can try a range of hands-on activities, including printing with LEGO and creating a personalised print using a traditional letterpress.
An artist talk will also be held the same day from 11am to noon, featuring Ōrewa printmaker and letterpress specialist Tara McLeod.
The exhibition runs throughout March at Estuary Arts Centre. Entry is free.
Pastel artists exhibit and convention coming to Ōrewa
The Pastel Artists of New Zealand (PANZ) will hold a national art exhibition at the Estuary Arts Centre in Ōrewa in early May as part of its annual convention. The exhibition will showcase a selection of pastel artworks from across New Zealand and will run alongside the PANZ convention, which will be held in Ōrewa over the weekend of May 1. The event will bring together professional and aspiring pastel artists, as well as painters working in a range of other mediums, to share techniques and ideas. Convention sessions will include seminars, demonstrations and workshops led by established artists from New Zealand and overseas. The programme aims to encourage artists to explore new techniques and approaches to using pastels. The convention workshops will be held at Ōrewa College and require prior registration. Featured guest speaker Susan Kuznitsky, a master pastelist from the United States, will also serve as one of the exhibition judges. Kuznitsky is known internationally for her use of colour and light and has received numerous awards for her work. Other presenters include Waikato artist Bernadette Ballantyne, whose work focuses on emotional realism, and Auckland artists Michael and Julie Freeman of Greenhithe, who are recognised for both their paintings and their international workshop programmes. The exhibition will be open to the public at Estuary Arts Centre during the convention period.
