Quiz fans should head to Warkworth RSA next Saturday, August 23 for a night of fun and food for a great sporting cause.
The event is being held to raise much-needed funds to get a squad of athletes and carers to the New Zealand Special Olympics in Christchurch this December.
Organiser Wendy Roberts says there will be plenty of prizes up for grabs, plus raffles, and the ticket price of $25 per person includes a platter of snacks on each table of eight.
“We have a huge task ahead of us and one of the ways we hope to raise some money and awareness is by hosting this quiz night,” she says.
“We are trying to get 32 athletes and their carers to Christchurch, which will cost approximately $50,000, including uniforms, accommodation, travel and registration.”
The quiz night is the latest in a series of fundraising events for the team that have included raffles, chocolate sales, a fashion parade and an art exhibition.
The Special Olympics is a cause particularly close to Roberts’ heart, as her 19-year-old daughter Grace is one of the 11 athletes living in the Rodney area hoping to attend.
An accomplished swimmer, Grace went to the last NZ Special Olympics four years ago, when it was held in Hamilton, coming home with three medals – silver in the 25-metre backstroke, silver in the relay and bronze in the 50m freestyle.
As well as swimmers, the Hibiscus Coast and Rodney squad includes 10-pin bowlers and one equestrian competitor.
Grace trains with Kowhai Swimming Club and the Hibiscus Coast Rodney Special Olympics squad at Stanmore Bay.
For Saturday’s quiz night fundraiser, mum Wendy is looking for teams to come along and join in the fun, and says donations of raffle prizes or help with sponsorship is always welcome. Doors open at 6pm and the quiz starts at 7pm
