Sonatas bookend Beethoven

Pianist Stephen De Pledge’s performance in Warkworth will be one not to be missed.

Acclaimed New Zealand pianist Stephen De Pledge will bring an inspiring programme, exploring the breadth and emotional power of the piano repertoire, when he performs in the Warkworth Town Hall on Sunday July 26.

A versatile performer known for his work as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist, De Pledge has enjoyed a distinguished career on stages around the world.

After studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal, he continued his studies as a Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music.

His solo career has taken him across Europe, Asia, Australasia and the United States, with performances at renowned venues such as Wigmore Hall and Kings Place in London. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with leading orchestras including the Philharmonia, Bournemouth Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony and New London orchestras.

De Pledge holds the position of senior lecturer in music at the University of Auckland, while continuing to perform internationally.

His programme in Warkworth will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s first and last piano sonatas. The Sonata in E flat, WoO 47 No.1 was written when the composer was just 12 years old, offering a glimpse of the young prodigy’s emerging genius.

In contrast, his final piano sonata, Op.111, was composed near the end of his eventful life and is widely regarded as one of the great pinnacles of the piano repertoire – a profound and deeply moving work.

Alongside these landmark works, the programme will also include the elegant Sonata in E by Sebastián de Albero, two of Stephen’s hugely entertaining improvisations, and a contemporary work by London-based New Zealand composer Jeroen Speak – shapes, symmetries and sounds – is a quirky and imaginative addition to the programme, bringing a fresh modern voice to the concert.

The evening concludes with two vivid and characterful works by Franz Liszt – Sposalizio, a reflective and lyrical piece inspired by the Italian Renaissance, and Wilde Jagd, a thrilling and virtuosic work full of energy and drama.

The concert starts at 4pm. Tickets are available at the door (cash only) and online through www.warkworthmusic.org.nz. Children and school students are free.
