Uncertainty over Warkworth Walks future

At more than six hours long, Insiders’ Tāwharanui is one of the walking options available on Sunday.

Warkworth Walks will return from Friday to Sunday, November 20 to 22, but its future beyond this year remains uncertain due to committee vacancies, rising costs and the challenge of finding new trails to attract walkers.

Organiser Luke Williamson said the event might not go ahead next year if replacements were not found for two key committee positions, as the committee could not legally operate without them.

“The economic situation is also contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the event’s future, having had a significant impact over the past two years, so this year we have put a lot of effort into reducing our own costs to

keep prices under control,” Williamson said. “Because we are a non-profit event, we can only do our best to keep all costs to a minimum without sacrificing what makes Warkworth Walks so special.”

However, the event continues to attract between 300 and 350 participants each year, depending on the trails on offer. There are only a few tickets left for this year’s walks and many are already sold out.

Williamson said the organisers were grateful for the ongoing support and welcomed anyone interested in joining the committee to help keep the event running.

He was also keen to hear about potential new trails, particularly those crossing private property or offering access to places that were not normally open to the public.

“Warkworth Walks offers one of the best ways to explore trails throughout the Mahurangi region, including lesser-known sections of familiar tracks, alongside like-minded people who love the outdoors and enthusiastic guides.”
