It started as two mates listening to records over a beer at a local bar, but a few more fans of the way music sounds from a vinyl disc, played on a turntable, are joining in and more are welcome.
Local musician Dean Morris and his mate Andy Derbyshire (who DJs as D-Vinyl) share a love of vinyl and recently have been getting together at the Good Home in Whangaparaoa to play their favourite tracks.
Andy, who restores record players, made a record player especially for the occasion – putting speakers into an old TV and wiring it to an 80s turntable.
Dean says it has that “good old school 80s record sound”, and when the pair played their records on it, others wanted to join in.
“People came up to listen and talk about records,” he said.
Anyone with a love of vinyl is welcome to bring a favourite record and play a track or two, joining like-minded music lovers over a beer (or two).
The get-togethers are monthly and the next one is on Thursday, June 1 at The Good Home at 7.30pm.
