Waipu Carnival flying high

Organisers of the annual Waipu Carnival on Easter Saturday are looking skyward this year … literally.

One of the new attractions at this year’s event will be helicopter rides over Bream Bay.

Another innovation will be the introduction of a pamper zone where visitors will be able to relax, get a massage or a beauty treatment.

The carnival, now in its 17th year, is a fundraiser for Waipu School. Last year it raised $60,000 and one of the organisers, Dee Field, says they are optimistic of reaching a similar target this year.

Funds raised will go towards playground improvements including maintenance of existing elements, safety upgrades and additional equipment such as climbing frames. If sufficient money is raised, the school would also like to buy shade sails and add to classroom resources.

The carnival programme includes an opportunity to browse a range of stalls and food outlets, look over a collection of hot rods, and buy tickets in a raffle to win a trip for two on a Perfect Day ocean cruise.

The quick-fire raffles will offer prizes such as grocery hampers, a movie projector, restaurant and cafe vouchers, chilly bin, and health product hampers.

There will be a merry-go-round and inflatable attractions for children, plus a dunk tank, and axe throwing and a climbing wall for the more adventurous.

Free entertainment will be happening throughout the day including local acts such as dance groups Carli Oso, Ezy Sol and Waipu Stars.

The carnival will be held in Caledonian Park, The Centre, Waipu, on April 19, from 9am-2pm.
