Wellsford celebrates kiwi music

Spellodies is a family band that normally performs catchy songs and comedy sketches. They were the winners of the 2024 APRA award for Best Song for Primary Age Kids.
Avya’s music is a blend of folk and pop with romantic undertones, inspired by artists such as John Mayer and Norah Jones.
DJ Damo has over 10 years of DJ experience and plays across a range of musical genres, fusing them into one funky mix.

Rodney Community, with the support of the Rodney Local Board, will deliver a series of free live music events called ‘Off the Shelf’ at Wellsford Library as part of the celebration of NZ Music Month in May.

The initiative aims to feature a diverse mix of experienced musicians, local music groups and emerging young artists from Wellsford and surrounding areas, creating opportunities for the community to enjoy family-friendly musical experiences.

Wellsford community facilitator Kiri Eriwata, an experienced musician herself, has been collaborating with artists and groups to organise these events.

The idea for Off the Shelf came from a desire to activate the library as a vibrant community space, celebrate local musical talent and create inclusive, accessible opportunities for people of all ages to experience live music in a relaxed and engaging environment.

“Not everyone can travel to bigger centres, so staging music and events locally helps ensure people can connect and have opportunities to participate. It also supports our local artists and gives them a platform to share their talent in their own community,” Eriwata says. “I believe music is a good tool for inclusion. It crosses age groups, cultures and backgrounds, and creates a shared experience where people can connect without needing anything more than just being present. It can be especially powerful in smaller communities, helping people feel a sense of belonging and connection.”

The programme will begin on Friday May 8 with a singing workshop taster with Raw Harmony at Wellsford Library from 3.30 to 4.30pm. The following day, it will be the turn of Andrew McLennan & the Kids – Songs from the Wellsford Community Garden followed by the award-winning Auckland family band Spellodies. Both events will take place at Wellsford Library from 10.30am.

On Friday May 15 the focus will be on songwriters. Acclaimed artist Avya, originally from Tomarata, will perform, and there will also be a couple of additional open slots for those wishing to share their work.

On Friday May 22, DJ lessons with Kaiwaka-based DJ Damo will be held at Wellsford Library from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. The series will conclude on Friday May 29 with karaoke and line dancing, giving members of the audience an opportunity to take the microphone and participate.
