Winter festival gets Waipū buzzing

The Vet Centre Tartan Pet Parade will return as part of the Waipu Winter Festival.

A packed calendar of events is helping bring colour to the colder months as the Waipū Winter Festival returns.

Organised by Promote Waipū, the community-focused festival, held this month and next, features a mix of entertainment, creative workshops and community fundraisers, all aimed at keeping locals connected throughout winter.

“Waipū is already a talented and active little community. Bringing together and promoting all these groups and activities over our quieter months is a great way to keep us connected, meet new people and maybe even try something new,” Promote Waipū’s Dee Field says.

This month’s highlights include The Great Debate at the Waipū Hotel, where locals will tackle the topic “Kilts are more appropriate than board shorts in Waipū”, alongside seafaring and shipwreck storytelling sessions hosted by the Waipū Scottish Migration Museum. This year also sees the return of the popular Stars in Your Eyes competition.

Creative events range from clay workshops at Black Shed Art Space to aerial yoga classes and gardening workshops, while community fundraisers include quiz nights, bingo and charity markets.

Next month’s calendar is also jam-packed. Organisers have planned Matariki events, including special tours of the Milky Way Glow Worm Cave at Waipū Caves Farm Park, mud and fun runs, whisky tasting, learn-to-knit sessions, Rock the Rules – a musical production featuring young Bream Bay talent – and more.

Festival organisers say the event celebrates Waipū’s strong community spirit while encouraging people to keep active during winter. They are also encouraging others to create their own events.
