Council wants no repeat of Manly bollards protest

A definite timeline for the public to have a say on the proposed installation of 300 bollards along Manly Beach (from the sailing club to Cross Street) is not yet known.

However, Auckland Council is aiming for consultation to begin late this month. Hibiscus & Bays Local Board chair Gary Brown says he understands Council wants “to let people cool down” on the issue first.

The bollards are designed to protect eroding dunes from further damage by vehicles.

Council agreed to consult on the project after public anger that erupted when work was about to begin last month (HM October 11 and 25).

The Manly bollards are expected to cost $35,000.

Details of when and how to have your say will be on the local board’s Facebook page and Auckland Council website under Have Your Say. Hibiscus Matters will also make it public in this newspaper and on our Facebook page.

Hatfields bollards on their way

In the meantime, the $37,000-worth of bollards due to go in at Hatfields Beach reserve will not be in before Christmas.

These bollards are being installed largely due to complaints from residents about freedom camping, driving, anti-social behaviour and rubbish on the reserve, particularly in summer.

At the local board’s October 28 workshop, Council staff told members that they are “a bit gun shy” after all the drama around the Manly bollards. “We want to make sure we get it right, and that access for boaties is not affected,” the staff member said.

Council staff are therefore working with a contractor on the exact location of the bollards in order to restrict access to the reserve for freedom camping, whilst still allowing boat trailers to park there.
