A discarded battery is thought to be the cause of a fire in a recycling truck servicing Schooner Avenue, Snells Beach on August 25.
Three fire appliances were deployed, and crews quickly contained the fire, using more than 3000 litres of water.
As a safety precaution, the collected material was offloaded at the scene. Traffic was be reduced to a single lane while the work was carried out.
The truck driver was safe and no one was injured.
Auckland Council pollution control staff monitored the site, and a replacement truck was brought in to minimise disruption to recycling collection services.
A Fire NZ spokesperson said the incident was a timely reminder that batteries should never be placed in recycling or rubbish bins. They should instead be disposed of through approved recycling and drop-off channels.
