The dumping of rubbish and green waste in Eaves Bush, Ōrewa, has been an ongoing problem but Laurie Rands of Eaves Bush Appreciation Group (EBAG) says they believe the offenders are mainly local residents.
EBAG volunteers look after the bush and have had to deal with dumped waste for years. Last month, a pile of bulbs of a weed plant that could spread through the native bush was dumped, and later the same week parts of a fridge found their way to the same location.
“At times we see nearby residents felling a tree or clearing their property and then the green waste ends up in the bush,” Rands says.
Garden waste and weeds have been dumped in the bush around half a dozen times recently.
Rands says the offenders, instead of getting rid of their own rubbish, are forcing volunteers and Auckland Council to do it for them.
“It’s the ultimate in laziness,” she says. “It’s really got to stop.”
