The Bird of the Year competition is officially underway and this year Hibiscus Matters hopes you will help us make the hihi bird of the year.
This tiny little fighter needs our help to thrive. Once common across the North Island, hihi were reduced to a single population on Te Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island. Now conservation efforts have successfully established a new population at several sites including Shakespear Regional Park.
Come on Coasties, let’s get behind our local bird hero and make the hihi New Zealand Bird of the Year! With your votes, we can do it.
Voting for this year’s competition opened at 9am on Monday, September 15 and closes 5pm on Sunday, September 28. The winner will be announced on Monday, September 29.
How to vote – Got to birdoftheyear.org.nz and search for hihi/stitchbird
