Controversial plans to dig up a 90-metre stretch of coastal footpath at the northern end of Snells Beach to encourage more shorebirds to roost there will be revisited by Rodney Local Board next month.
The proposal to shorten the path and get rid of a picnic table led to a barrage of opposition, including a 700-signature petition, prompting Auckland Council’s natural environment team to reconsider the idea and analyse different options (MM, Mar 31).
After hearing from member Geoff Upson that he was receiving requests for information, senior conservation adviser Megan Young told a board workshop on July 2 that she had been in touch with all interested parties and was preparing a report.
“We understand people are looking for an answer and it has been a while, so I’ve reassured them that we will be coming to the board in August and we’ll be sending out a response to everybody who submitted feedback in the next month or so,” she said.
“Ultimately we’re looking at just doing some extra engagement with the community at this stage, but I’ll flesh that out in a memo to you.”
