Potholing investigations for wastewater pipeline in progress

Watercare contractors are conducting additional potholing investigations in Warkworth along the proposed wastewater pipeline route, from now to late August.

The work is taking place on weekdays from 7am to 5pm and focusing on key streets including Great North Road, Elizabeth Street, Queen Street and Kapanui Street.

It enables Watercare to locate existing underground utilities such as gas, electricity, Chorus cables, stormwater, water and wastewater lines, which will ensure the pipeline’s construction proceeds without unexpected service disruptions.

Watercare said the potholing would generate some noise and vibration, however levels would be kept to a minimum and in accordance with Auckland Council requirements.

Meanwhile, work to provide a new, larger waste pipe and pumping system to reduce sewage overflows into the Mahurangi River is due to start working next month.

A pump has already been installed outside The Bridgehouse that will push wastewater along a new 250mm pipe, to replace the old 150mm pipe that regularly blocks and backs up, causing raw sewage spills.

The pump and pipe system is a temporary solution aimed at easing the overflows until the new main pipeline is installed, starting mid-next year.
