As well as new average speed cameras, drivers using Matakana Road will also have to contend with roadworks in the coming months, as Auckland Transport (AT) installs a series of safety upgrades between Sharp and Green Roads.
Although there are no firm dates yet, AT says the work will be carried out between now and the end of the financial year.
The proposed changes include:
• a new flush median and road markings at the junction with Sharp Road
• road widening, new kerbs, drainage and road markings near Oak River Drive
• wider road shoulders and a new kerb opposite 789 Matakana Road
• new high friction surfacing, wider shoulders, a new kerb and clearer markings at the Wright Road intersection
• wider road shoulders, a new kerb and improved drainage near 822 Matakana Road
• wider centre lines and shoulders between 850 and 877 Matakana Road
• new kerbs, side traffic islands and ‘red carpet’ road marking approaching the junction with Green Road
An AT spokesperson said the changes were being made in response to safety concerns over much of Matakana Road.
“This area has been identified as high-risk for crashes,” they said. “The proposed safety upgrades along the corridor aim to reduce the likelihood of loss of control, intersection and head-on crashes.
“These improvements will help reduce the risk of crashes and make the road safer for everyone.”
AT said the safety measures would provide drivers with better visibility and encourage safer speeds – something that the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is also trying to achieve with its new average speed cameras between Clayden and Wright Roads, which were activated on December 1.
Public feedback on the proposed changes can be submitted until Sunday, December 14.
