River protection continues

A stretch of Matakana River will be protected with native plants.

A second planting day will be held in Ward Road Matakana next week, organised by Friends of Awa Matakanakana (FOAM).

A similar event held in May saw 40 enthusiastic volunteers establish 2500 plants along the riverside site.

“We now need help to put another 2500 plants in the ground, at a second site on Ward Road,” a spokesperson said.

“Fencing is in place to protect the young plants from livestock, so all that’s needed are the people to make it happen.”

The plantings will help to restore a vulnerable stretch of the river.

Children are welcome, and there will be a sausage sizzle provided once the planting is finished.

The morning event is on Sunday July 26, at 2 Ward Road, Matakana, starting at 9am. Parking is available on site.

Participants should wear sturdy footwear and gloves, and are asked to bring spades and weather-appropriate clothing. The planting will go ahead rain or shine.
