New lighting on a public stairway that links Elizabeth Street Reserve to Millstream Place is being switched off too early, leaving the steep accessway in darkness after 10pm, a Warkworth resident said.
His two main concerns are safety and security.
Millstream Place resident Geoffrey Turtley said he was pleased to see the upgraded lighting, which was installed by Auckland Council recently, but the new illuminated bollards needed to stay on until morning.
“There used to be a street light at the top of the stairs that was on all night and shone directly into the eyes of people using the stairs,” he said.
“So they’ve taken that out and put new lights up the stairwell, which is fabulous, but they don’t remain on late enough for people who use the walkway after 10pm.”
Turtley said he wanted the stairwell’s lighting hours aligned with other street lights in the area that stay on all night, as the darkness created a hazard on the stairway.
“If somebody had a trip and a fall, they could get seriously injured there.”
He added that security was also a concern and people using the stairwell after 10pm, such as those coming back from the Bridgehouse, would feel more comfortable if the bollard lights were kept on.
Council said it was investigating the complaint and, if possible, would look to keep the lights on after 10pm.
