If you own a dog and live in, or plan to visit kiwi zones across Rodney this winter, Kiwi Avoidance Training is an essential step in helping protect our precious native birds.
Winter often means quieter tracks and shorter daylight hours, but it’s still a time when dogs and kiwi can unexpectedly cross paths in the areas we know are home to kiwi, including the buffer zones around Tāwharanui and Maunga Tamahunga. A single encounter can be fatal for a kiwi, even from the gentlest family pet.
These quick 10-minute sessions are a simple but powerful way to help your dog learn to avoid kiwi scent. Guided by an experienced trainer using specialised training techniques, the sessions are safe, effective, and suitable for working dogs, hunting dogs and family pets alike.
Whether your dog is new to the programme or due for a refresher, now is the perfect time to get trained before winter adventures on our beaches, tracks and rural landscapes.
Join the 250+ local dogs that have already completed Kiwi Avoidance Training and help keep kiwi safe through the winter months.
Free of charge — thanks to the generous support of the Rodney Local Board
