A big catch for a bigger cause

There’s around $5000 in prizes to be won.

The Tinopai School Fishing Contest will cast its lines on Easter Saturday, April 4, aiming to raise funds to continue improving the school’s educational infrastructure.

This event, which has been held since 2000 and normally takes place during the second weekend of January, has moved to Easter with the aim of attracting more participants.

One of the organisers Erana Fenton says funds raised this year will be spent on a new swimming pool and outside classroom activities.

“As well as the fishing prizes, we’ll have some spot prizes for attendees, generously donated by Kaipara businesses,” she said.

“We’re expecting a big turnout, as previous events have attracted people from as far away as Dunedin and even Australia.”

The competition will be split between the inner and outer harbour, with fish categories including snapper, kingfish, trevally and kahawai. There will also be a sprat competition for children aged four to 13, with free entry.

Fishing will start at 7am and finish at 4pm. There will also be lots happening at the school with a live entertainment from midday onwards. Tickets are $35 and are available here: https://tinyurl.com/y4s6arym
