Kiwis are being encouraged to recognise the contribution of their local volunteer firefighters by nominating them for this years Volunteer Fire Brigade of the Year awards.
The United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA) has launched the awards as part of International Volunteer Year 2026, an initiative that celebrates volunteer brigades and the role they play in communities across Aotearoa.
Volunteer firefighters are often the first on the scene of a wide range of emergencies, including fires, floods, medical emergencies, and motor vehicle crashes.
Many brigades also support schools, community events and fundraisers, and provide fire safety education and advice, making them an integral part of the local community.
UFBA wants people to share stories about why their local brigade deserves recognition, including examples of times crews have gone above and beyond or made a difference in the community or their lives. Nominations can include examples of a brigade’s contribution to an emergency response, community activities, education or support provided to individuals following an emergency.
The awards will focus on the quality and impact of the stories submitted rather than the number of nominations a brigade receives.
Brigades of all sizes are eligible, with separate small, medium and large brigade of the year categories giving smaller crews the same opportunity for recognition.
Photos and videos can also be submitted alongside nominations.
Winning brigades will receive national recognition, a trophy and grocery or petrol vouchers to support the brigade and its members.
Nominations opened earlier this month and close on October 11, with the winners announced on October 25 at the UFBA Conference Hui.
People can nominate a brigade by completing the online nomination form on the UFBA website and explaining why the brigade is important to them or their community, what makes it stand out and examples of its impact.
