Ready to test your fitness for a good cause?
Then lace up your sneakers for the Cals for the Gals breast cancer fundraiser, which returns for a second year at Mad Mel Movement Gym on 1 Worker Road in Wellsford on Sunday, October 12, from 9am to 11am.
Money is raised via tickets sold to compete in the 5km walk-a-thon but people can also donate by pledging “a dollar a calorie” and taking on cardio challenges such as the rowing and SkiErg machines, bikes and treadmills.
Hydration and snacks will be provided to keep participants fuelled throughout the morning.
Gym owner Mel Colthurst, who started the event, says it’s about making it accessible for everyone.
“If you can’t walk or run, you can hop on a machine and still contribute. Last year was a big success.
Around 60 people took part and we raised about $3500, and that was just with the walk-a-thon. This year I’d love to double that – $6000 would be awesome.”
All proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.
“Breast cancer touches so many families, and there isn’t always as much financial support as people think when you’re going through it. This is our way of helping – together as a community,” Colthurst says.
The day will also feature talks from local women and whanau affected by breast cancer, plus spot prizes including candles, pilates vouchers, food and beverage packs – all donated by local businesses wanting to back the cause.
