Coastguard Mangawhai calling for new crew

Coastguard Mangawhai is seeking new volunteers to join both its on-water and shore-based teams.

The unit was officially recognised as a stand-alone entity earlier this year and operates a dedicated rescue vessel, tow vehicle and onshore facilities. It provides local search and rescue services, supported by Coastguard New Zealand and the community.

Initial recruiting last year resulted in three crews comprising around 32 volunteers, plus several others who serve on the management team. Unit crew coordinator Duncan McKenzie said the organisation is seeking additional volunteers as existing members progress through Coastguard training and leadership pathways.

“We are looking for people who are keen to get involved in a volunteer role where the view is different every day, potentially saving lives at sea,” McKenzie says.

Two of the vacancies currently available are for wet crew with boating experience.

“We are looking for reliable, committed, team-spirited and motivated people to crew our rescue vessel. We’ll provide ongoing training and development to keep your skills sharp, but for now, we need people with previous boating experience to help us bolster our crew numbers.”

Coastguard Mangawhai is also seeking shore-based volunteers, with opportunities available for people with skills in administration, fundraising, bookkeeping, accounting, social media, maintenance and community networking. Volunteers who are experienced with vessel, tractor and trailer maintenance are also invited to apply.

“If you are interested in playing an all-important support role around vessel, tractor and trailer maintenance, have a good local network, are experienced in social media and online presence, or have experience in general administration, we would love to talk to you,” McKenzie says.
