Whangaparāoa College held its annual ANZAC Assembly on May 7, providing an opportunity for students and staff to come together in remembrance.

This year’s assembly, delayed slightly due to the school holidays, welcomed members of the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA, while representative David Dryde shared personal reflections with the students, offering a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in times of conflict.

The ceremony featured speeches from senior prefect and Wānanga students, while two junior learners laid the commemorative wreath. The school’s Acting Principal, Davina Dean, addressed the assembly, challenging students to consider the courage, resilience, and sense of responsibility shown by those who served – many of whom were their age or not much older.

Dean invited learners to reflect on what it means to put others before themselves and to consider the values of Manaakitanga (care and respect) and Rangatiratanga (leadership). She encouraged students to view themselves as kaitiaki – guardians of the world they will inherit – and to think about the impact they wish to have.
