Grey skies and rain didn’t stand a chance in Paparoa on Saturday, April 1, when the second Paparoa Pride was held at the Paparoa Showgrounds.
The less than perfect weather was easily upstaged and outshone by a raft of rainbows and the brightest of colourful characters at the picnic and parade for the LGBTQ+ community and friends.
The event was opened with a karakia from the recently-elected Maori ward councillor for Kaipara District Council, Ihapera Paniora, and Wellington Paranormal actress and comedian Karen O’Leary provided plenty of laughs as MC.Local musicians, singers and circus performers provided non-stop entertainment and there was a variety of food trucks to keep the kai coming.
Organisers said there was a great atmosphere and they were already looking forward to next year’s event, and thanked Paniora, O’Leary and everyone who had helped to make the day such a success.
