Expo showcases life after school

The annual expo is an opportunity for businesses to get in front of school leavers, regardless of whether they plan to go on to tertiary education or look for work locally.

Businesses in the wider Mahurangi area are invited to participate in a careers evening at Mahurangi College in August.

The evening will be an opportunity to showcase the career paths a business offers and connect with possible future employees.

All eight NZ universities, polytechnics and other educational providers will also be in attendance, as well as the police, St John, the fire service, and the NZ Defence Force.

Careers coordinator Jo Wildermoth says the annual Community Future Pathways Evening provides an informal forum for both parents and students to learn more about local job opportunities and to discover how to get into specific job roles.

She said this event was always well attended by Mahurangi students and the wider community.

“We usually have around 50 exhibitor stands,” she said.

“Other local schools such as Rodney College and Horizon School are also invited along. As well as vocational pathway information, attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss tertiary pathways with school liaison officers from universities.”

Between 160 to 180 Year 13 students finish every year at the college. While most go on to university, some choose to travel, while others look for work. There are also a number of Year 12 school leavers every year.

The careers evening will be held in the college gymnasium on Thursday August 6, from 7pm to 8.30pm.
