Wet roads and longer nights make driving harder for everyone in winter, but a free course being offered in Te Hana may at least make it safer for one of the most vulnerable groups on the road – young people.
A free defensive driving course for 16 to 25-year-olds on a restricted licence is being run at Te Hana Marae over four evenings next month, with ABC Driving School owner Claire Longman at the helm.
The Waipu-based NZTA-qualified driving instructor says not only will the lessons help young drivers reduce the time before they can sit their full test, it will also help them become much safer behind the wheel.
“The course helps them to get a full understanding of who they are as drivers and how they can contribute to safer journeys, having respect for themselves and other road users,” she says.
The course is being funded by Rodney Local Board’s Rodney Youth Project, which is paying for 10 places, according to youth coordinator Priscilla McClintock.
“Te Hana Te Ao Marama came up with the idea as they were aware of the demand in their community and we were happy to support it,” she said. “They did one last term and it booked out in one day.”
Attendees must be able to attend all four evenings, which run from 6pm to 8pm on May 19th, 22nd, 26th and 29th.
