The Warkworth-based Kowhai Youth Trust has tripled the number of grants it provides compared to two years ago, delivering vital support to local young people across education, health, wellbeing and sport.
Chair Ken Bogue says the trust is quietly stepping in to fill gaps that families might otherwise struggle with – from laptops and uniforms to therapy sessions and Scout fees.
Applications and donations can now be submitted via the trust’s website, which is allowing the trust to respond quickly and with purpose, ensuring timely help where it’s needed most.
A significant portion of this year’s support focused on children with sensory, developmental and neurodiverse needs, thanks to special funding from the Rodney Health Charitable Trust. Grants enabled full sensory assessments and follow-up occupational therapy, with tailored strategies such as self-regulation tools, sleep plans and home-based routines.
Occupational therapist Vicki Collier said the impact has been clear, with children showing progress in areas such as anxiety management, improved daily functioning and better family understanding of ADHD and ASD. One kindy-aged child, previously unable to attend regularly, has begun transitioning into school with the help of consistent sensory supports.
Beyond health, the trust has also funded school stationery, digital devices, music lessons at Mahurangi College and sports fees – ensuring no child misses out.
Much of this work is sustained through local generosity, including long-standing support from the Lions Club of the Kowhai Coast and passionate individuals within the Mahurangi community.
Bogue said the trust remains deeply grateful to donors and is seeking new supporters to help extend its reach further.
