High tea celebrates bakers

A High Tea with all the trimmings seems like the perfect opportunity to hear from some inspirational speakers, while raising funds for Red Beach dementia care provider Platinum Community Centre.

The Sapphire High Tea, on November 22, is also a chance to acknowledge two of the country’s most popular bakers, Dame Alison Holst and her son Simon.

Everyone who attends will receive a signed copy of Simon and Dame Alison Holst’s book Cooking for Christmas. A copy of their latest book, The Complete Home Baking Book, described by Simon and Dame Alison as their “baking bible”, will be auctioned at the afternoon tea.

Co-organiser Monica Grimshaw of Platinum Community Centre says so far the response from corporates has been wonderful, with almost half the tables sold.

The event is hosted by Rodney MP Mark Mitchell and will be held at St John’s Church Hall in Centreway Rd, Orewa on November 22 at 2pm. Guest speakers are Dame Alison’s daughter, Dr Kirsten Holst, who is a Geriatrician. She will provide a personal and professional talk about dementia and its effects on the people who live with it.

Local businessman Eddie Grooten of Dad’s Pies will share insights into how he grew his business from a small bakery in Red Beach into an international company that produces more than eight million pies each year.

The event can cater for around 100 guests and is an opportunity for businesses to treat customers, suppliers or staff by booking a table ($350 for a table of 10). Individual tickets can also be purchased and are $35 each.

Delicious treats, mainly from recipes in Dame Alison and Simon Holst’s new book, will be served and the dress code is ‘smart and elegant’. Dame Alison is making a Christmas cake. There are prizes for the best-presented table and most glamorous outfit.

Info and tickets: phone Beverley, 421 1511 or 027 291 3463 or Platinum, 421 1511.
