Whanau, friends, bikes, trikes, rain and shine all made appearances at the Red Beach Pump Track opening earlier this month.
Since then, the tracks have been buzzing with wheels from all over the Coast. When Hibiscus Matters visited on a Monday morning, a handful of locals were making good use of the new facility. The track features two skill levels, with blue for an easier ride and white for the more experienced.
One visitor was dad Zac Hoffman and his adventurous toddler Poppy, who were trying out the white track. Poppy enjoyed the front row seat while her dad powered them along and kept them on course.
The Susnjak family also brought their bikes along from Ōrewa, with mum Sarah hearing requests for one more ride more than once from two of her daughters that enjoyed the blue track.
“It’s nice to get out of the house, and it’s good for families nearby who can easily walk to the park, ” she said.
Hibiscus and Bays Local Board chair Alexis Poppelbaum oversaw the project from proposal to completion. Despite the rain bucketting down on the opening day, she said that many people still turned up with their wheels to enjoy the new track.
“It’s been a long time coming, but seeing it open and young people absolutely loving it, and stories of kids riding until night-time makes me smile so much,” she said.
