Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 11 this year, and while many will be looking for ways to show appreciation, not everyone wants, or needs, to spend a lot to make it meaningful.
A recent survey by US site Mixbook found that 74 percent of mums believe a Mother’s Day gift should cost less than $50. With the cost of living on everyone’s mind, Hibiscus Matters asked locals for some low-cost, heartfelt ideas to celebrate mums across the Coast.
A clean and tidy house
For many mothers, the housework never ends. Giving the gift of a clean kitchen, a vacuumed floor, or even washed windows can be a meaningful gesture, especially when time is short and chores pile up. How about attacking those high-up spots your mum might struggle to reach, washing the dog, or weeding the garden?
Uninterrupted family time
For many, it’s making those core memory moments that matter, especially when it’s hard to find quality time in a busy world.
The forecast is showing a partially sunny day with scattered clouds, perfect for a stroll or walking the dog along Ōrewa Beach, a walk at Wenderholm or Shakespear Regional Parks, or a wander along the Ōrewa Estuary. Leave the phones behind and simply enjoy each other’s company.
For those who’d rather have a day inside, a family game night offers the perfect opportunity for a laugh and friendly competitiveness.

Food made with love
Whether it’s breakfast in bed, a packed lunch for a picnic, or dinner at home, a lovingly made meal goes a long way. Add a hand-written note or menu for a special touch, just remember to leave the kitchen nice and tidy afterwards!
A card full of love
It may seem simple, but a handwritten card filled with kind words can mean the world. If time has slipped away, it’s also a last-minute option that still shows you care, and it’s something mum can treasure for years to come.

Get creative – handmade gifts
No matter your age, if you’re crafty, or willing to give it a go, a handmade gift can be one of the most personal and appreciated ways to show love. From pressed flower bookmarks and hand-painted mugs to homemade bath salts or a simple photo frame, a DIY present is often treasured far more than something store-bought.
Children can join in too, making cards, drawings or decorations that mum can proudly display. These small gestures often become keepsakes that bring joy for years. You could put those old photos sitting in a box into an album, or create a digital album from the hundreds of photos on your mum’s phone.
Craft stores often have kits and supplies, and there are plenty of easy tutorials online. The key is thoughtfulness, not perfection, anything made with love will go a long way.
Although every mum is different in their own wonderful way, and their mother’s day will look a little different, often the best gifts aren’t about the money spent. Whether it’s a card, a walk along the beach or a dinner made with love, simple acts can sometimes make the most impact.
