Making a splash for cash

As the organiser of the Arkles Bay Winter Splash, Greg Holland has fancy dress and he’s not afraid to use it!

A splash and dash for charity, first held five years ago, has become a popular fundraiser for hospice.

Arkles Bay Winter Splash organiser, Greg Holland, says 20 people turned up to the first event, keen to jump into the cold sea, dressed in costumes, all for charity. Around 100 took part last August.

So far more than $6200 has been raised, and Greg hopes that this month’s event, on Sunday, August 29, could bring this up to $10,000.

No actual swimming is involved – participants donate to hospice, then get dressed up – “the nuttier the better”, Greg says – and get a little wet.

It is recommended that you comb the local hospice shops for suitable attire.

Greg says the ages of the ‘splashers’ range from the very young to his own parents, who are in their late 70s.

Spot prizes are on offer.

The event is held rain, hail or shine – just turn up at 10am at the boat ramp end of Arkles Bay.
