Massive log pile lights up skies near Matakana

The night skies around Big Omaha and Point Wells were lit up by a spectacular blaze on Thursday night last week, when a huge pile of forestry logs went up in smoke.

Fire crews from Leigh, Matakana and Warkworth were called to rein in the controlled burn, when shooting flames and embers from the 15-metre high woodpile threatened to spread to surrounding trees.

Crews spent almost three hours at the remote site between Quintal and Upper Whangateau Roads hosing down the fire surrounds.

Because the fire could clearly be seen from miles around, several people called 111, including some who thought the blaze was in Point Wells.
