The closure of Life Pharmacy in Coast Plaza this month upset customers – it is understood the store has been in Whangaparāoa for several decades.
Pharmacy staff, and Green Cross Health, which represents Life Pharmacy, did not wish to comment. However, a spokesperson for Coast Plaza’s management, Murchison Group, says that the previous landlord and the pharmacy were unable to agree on commercial terms.
Bargain Chemist will move into the store vacated by Life Pharmacy late next month.
Bargain Chemist did not respond to requests for an interview, but its website states that it opened its first budget-priced pharmacy in 2018 and is growing rapidly.
The impact of this cut price model on local pharmacies, including other Life Pharmacies and Unichem, remains to be seen.
