Omaha surf lifesavers stay rescue ready with NZCT grant

Making a splash: Omaha surf lifesavers purchased a new surf ski thanks to an NZCT grant.

Omaha Beach Surf Life Saving Club (OBSLSC) has received a grant of $4895 to buy a surf ski, awarded by the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) last month.

The new kayak will enable more lifeguards, especially new and junior members, to train effectively, compete in surf lifesaving events, and sharpen their emergency response skills in the ocean.

Senior committee member Rohan Whitaker says asking already time-strapped volunteer lifeguards to take on extra fundraising is not sustainable, so grants like NZCT’s are critical for purchasing vital gear.

Moreover, government funding does not cover surf sport equipment, and club resources have been focused on maintaining a safe, functional clubhouse

“This generous grant from NZCT for new surf ski equipment will give more lifeguards the opportunity to compete, improve their fitness, and develop vital rescue skills,” he says.

According to Whitaker, Surf Life Saving New Zealand has identified competition as a key factor in lifeguard retention, providing motivation for volunteers to stay fit and hone their skills.

For surf lifesavers, participation in these events is what keeps them rescue ready, physically capable of performing under pressure in real emergencies.

OBSLSC has been actively recruiting adults into the lifeguarding programme, passing down experience to the next generation while growing its base of competitive Masters athletes (individuals aged 30 and over).

Consequently, the club has seen a rise in newly qualified lifeguards, all of whom will benefit from access to better training equipment.

Junior lifeguard coach Claudia Stevenson adds, “The addition of more adjustable surf skis will give greater access especially to the junior girls. This will help develop their fitness and skills in the ocean.”

NZCT general manager of grants, marketing and communications Ben Hodges says surf lifesaving is a fantastic sport.

“We’re delighted to help this club better provide sporting opportunities for its members and the knock-on benefits of our grant for the safety of Omaha Beach goers is obvious.”

He adds grants like this wouldn’t be possible without the responsible gaming partnerships with Rodney venues.
