Rodney Local Board grants fund new youth activities

Teen drop-in sessions, wellbeing courses and a sparring competition are among nearly 20 new youth activities to be supported in the inaugural round of Rodney Youth’s new Small Projects Fund.

The Rodney Local Board initiative provides one-off grants of up to $2500 for activities and events created by young people, for young people via its Rodney Youth Project (MM, Sep 1).

Project leaders said while they were unable to fund every application received, they were able to back a wide range of activities that prioritised youth leadership, were free-of-charge and provided interesting opportunities for young people throughout the district.

Rodney youth development coordinator Priscilla McClintock said it was great to be able to support a huge range of activities this term and into summer, covering everything from creative arts to wellbeing to fitness.

“Some of these activities are starting right now in Term 4, but there is a lot more to come,” she said. “We will soon have another 11 activities to announce – we just need to sort out the finer details.”

The first grant recipients include:
• Leigh Teen Hang-outs – Wednesday afternoons at Leigh Hall
• Creative Vibes – teen art course in Wellsford
• Worth It! – teen wellbeing and leadership course in Warkworth
• Rangatahi Sparring Comp – youth-led sparring competition at Snells Beach next month
• Ei Katu Workshop – a Cook Island headdress-making and dance workshop in Wellsford
• Teen Yoga and Mindfulness – free weekly teen yoga and mindfulness course in Warkworth
