Maungatūroto Library has been forced to close indefinitely after tests confirmed the building is unsafe.
The closure follows significant water damage in the neighbouring former Plunket room.
Remedial work, including carpet removal and dehumidification, was carried out, and spore testing was undertaken to assess air quality.
Results have since confirmed the building is not safe to reopen.
“For everyone’s health and safety, the library will remain closed,” a statement said. “We know this is frustrating and appreciate the community’s patience while we work through the next steps.”
Temporary measures were put in place while testing was ongoing, with returns redirected to local collection points, including First National Real Estate in Maungatūroto.
Council staff are now exploring alternative options and are asking the community for help in identifying a suitable temporary space.
“If you know of a space in Maungatūroto that could work as a small library, we’d really like to hear from you,” the statement said.
Despite the closure, library services remain available through alternative options.
The “My Book Bag” service is operating for Maungatūroto users, allowing residents to order books and other items online for weekly delivery. Each bag contains six to eight items, and multiple orders can be placed per household. Items can be collected from, and returned to, the First National Real Estate office.
Residents can also access nearby libraries in Paparoa, Kaiwaka, Mangawhai and Dargaville, where items can be borrowed, returned or collected.
Council says it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
