Sandspit car fire

A car fire at Sandspit on Sunday February 15 was caused when the vehicle inadvertently parked over a recently-extinguished small rubbish fire at a residential address.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said any reported “explosion” was likely the popping of tyres and airbag deployment mechanisms. There was no structural damage to the property.

The spokesperson also confirmed that it did not involve an electric vehicle (EV).

“We have not noticed any rise in the number of car fires being attended since EVs and other alternative fuel vehicles entered the national car fleet,” the spokesperson said.

“All vehicle fires are serious events and pose risks to people nearby, regardless of the type of vehicle or fuel.

As with any fire, it’s important to keep people back, to stay out of the way of smoke which can carry toxic materials, and to call 111 immediately.”
