School fundraising transformation

The developers of the new fundraising site hope it will lessen schools’ dependence on traditional, and labour intensive, fundraising efforts. The logo was designed by Mahurangi College student Caitlin Faye.

A new digital platform developed by two local entrepreneurs is set to change the way schools across New Zealand raise money.

The idea for the project came about last year when one of the founders’ wives, a member of her school’s PTA, was heavily involved in organising fundraising events.

Like many schools, the PTA relied on sausage sizzles, raffles and donated goods from local businesses to meet its goals. While they eventually raised enough money for picnic tables, umbrellas and sports gear, the process was time-consuming and labour-intensive.

“It struck me that there had to be an easier and more efficient way for schools to fundraise,” co-founder Stephane Courtine says.

Together with business partner Gregory Lamothe, the pair began researching fundraising trends, speaking with parents, PTAs and long-time business supporters. A year later, their solution, The Toko Project, was born.

Toko brings together the most common fundraising tools – auctions, raffles and donations – into one user-friendly, online hub. Schools can also run “buy now” fundraisers and event ticketing through the site.

Unlike many other platforms, it is free to use, with no commission fees.

“One hundred per cent of the money goes straight to the school,” Courtine says.

The real advantage, however, lies in reach. Supporters can browse by region or by school, meaning grandparents, friends and whānau living outside the local area, or even overseas, can take part.

Building the platform required an investment of around $20,000 and hundreds of hours of development.

Features are still being added, including a custom raffle ticketing system and options to showcase business sponsors.

Several schools, including Matakana, Tauhoa and Ahuroa, are already on board, with more expected to follow.

“We’re not replacing traditional methods.

“Toko simply enhances them, making fundraising more efficient and accessible.”

The goal is clear – to get as many schools as possible registered, creating a larger audience and more successful fundraisers nationwide.
