School growth mirrors local building boom

Construction has begun on a new two-storey classroom block at Mangawhai Beach School (MBS), as the school continues to keep pace with rapid roll growth.

Announced last year, the new building will include six teaching classrooms and a dedicated cooking facility, making the purpose-built space a significant and much-needed upgrade for the school.

The project is being funded by the Ministry of Education as part of a $30 million investment aimed at supporting roll growth and delivering new classrooms in state schools.

Mangawhai Beach School’s roll currently sits at 707 students, with all existing classrooms, including eight temporary spaces, operating at full capacity.

“The school is excited to have this addition in support of roll growth,” MBS board of trustees chair Bruce Nelder says.

The new block is being constructed behind the school gym and is expected to take around a year to complete.

“There is a good plan in place to keep disruptions to a minimum while the build takes place,” Nelder says.

Hailed as one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing coastal regions, the new classrooms reflect the population growth and development happening in Mangawhai and surrounding areas.
