Creative sand sculptors will gather on the beach at Mangawhai Heads for the annual Sandsational event on Sunday January 25, from 10am onwards.
Organised by Dennis Emsley and supported by Mangawhai Lions Club, the event promises a mix of imagination, teamwork and friendly rivalry for all ages. It is fast becoming a summer highlight, attracting everyone from seasoned sand artists to first-timers keen to give it a go.
Dennis says the day is all about community spirit.
“Every year we’re blown away by what people create,” he says.
“We’ve seen everything from giant hibiscus flowers to a lifelike hippo, a variety of crafted turtles and a giant ‘poopsy’.
“It’s a wonderful way for people to connect, have fun and enjoy our beautiful beach.”
The fun will start with a fancy dress ‘dog and owner’ competition, which costs $5 to enter. The best matched pairs will take home some great prizes.
The sand sculpture competition will also start at 10am and contestants will have until around 2pm to create their masterpieces. Entry is $5 and there will be prizes for first, second and third placegetters, in both the junior and senior sections. Competitors are asked to bring their own tools, buckets and sculpting gear.
There will be tug-of-war challenges during the day, for both seniors and juniors, which are free.
Anyone aged under eight years can join a Buried Treasure Hunt happening around midday, and once again, there will be some “super” prizes to be won.
Dennis says this is always a very popular competition and while entry is free, space is limited, so treasure hunters are advised to register early.
In addition to the beach competitions, the Lions will run the popular Drop-the-Golf Ball Raffle. Tickets can be purchased from various locations prior to the event and winners do not have to be present on the day.
“All winners will be notified, whether they live locally or further afield.”
Dennis says Sandsational is a not-for-profit community event with all the proceeds from ticket sales going to the Lions Club, which then distributes the funds to community organisations.
“It would not be possible without the wonderful sponsorship of local businesses like Barfoot & Thompson, Mangawhai New World, Bunnings Mangawhai and The Vet Centre Mangawhai. We really appreciate their support.”
Tickets are available online at www.mangawhailionsclub.flicket.co.nz, or from Mangawhai Lions Club (027 443 3600) from now until January 25.
There will be limited parking at the Heads, so organisers are suggesting people park at The Domain, or other spots around town, and catch the free shuttle bus provided by Kaipara District Council to and from the event. It runs from 10am to 7pm on the day (check the local timetable).
