Warkworth Food Tour sampled goodies at some of the town’s most recognised eateries, raising awareness and support for Hestia Women’s Refuge and its Paint Warkworth Purple in July initiative.
Participants were encouraged to wear something purple as part of the tour, while visiting each of the local businesses involved.
The tour featured seven stops: No Filter Coffee, BamBoo Asian Canteen, Warkworth Butcher, Pete and Mary’s, So French, Aldo’s, and finishing at Tahi Bar and Kitchen.
The event was organised by One Mahurangi, with Rosie Hutchinson leading the tour and manager Richard Hutchinson also attending. It was sponsored by Carren Richardson and Richard Park from Guthrie Bowron Warkworth.
Among those attending were Hestia Women’s Refuge community engagement and social media coordinator Claudia Lindberg, along with the organisation’s ambassadors, comedian and radio presenter Nick Rado, and television personality and podcaster Matilda Green.
Lindberg said the idea of painting the town purple originated at Timaru Women’s Refuge in the South Island, but that it was only held there for one winter.
“I think when people do things in purple around the town, and victims see that people are getting behind the initiative, it shows them that the issue is being talked about, that it is being brought to the forefront and that things are changing,” she says.
