The speed limit on SH1 from the Warkworth motorway roundabout north to Sheepworld will increase to 100km/h by July, following a six-week public consultation by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) (MM, Feb 17).
Around 60 per cent of respondents did not support keeping the current speed limits of 60km/h from the roundabout north to Grimmers Bridge, just beyond Kaipara Flats and Goatley Roads, and 80km/h from there up to Sheepworld.
The changes are part of new coalition government rules to reverse many speed limit reductions brought in by the previous government since 2020. While most of these reversals will happen automatically, NZTA was allowed to consult on some roads to see if the public wanted to keep the current lower speed limits.
There were 1514 responses on the 0.8km stretch from Pukerito roundabout north to Grimmers Bridge and 1435 responses on the 1.62km section north to Sheepworld.
“Feedback did not show majority public support, therefore this speed limit must reverse back to the previous higher speed limit,” an NZTA spokesperson said. “This will be implemented in a phased approach over the coming months, with a view to completing all speed changes by July 1.”
