Maintaining good health becomes increasingly vital as people age, but one often-overlooked aspect is dental hygiene.
According to Warkworth hygienist Lisa Lazenby, proper oral care is not just about preserving a beautiful smile, it plays a crucial role in overall health and well-being.
“Dental hygiene is essential for preventing various oral health issues including cavities, gum disease and tooth loss,” Lazenby says.
“These conditions can significantly impact an older adult’s quality of life, leading to difficulties in eating, speaking and socialising.
“Additionally, research shows a strong link between oral health and systemic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections and dementia. Poor dental hygiene can exacerbate these conditions, making regular dental care even more critical.”
Lazenby says that unfortunately, many older adults face barriers to maintaining good dental hygiene. Limited mobility, financial constraints and cognitive decline can all hinder a person’s ability to care for their teeth.
“It is essential for family members and caregivers to support and encourage proper dental care routines, including regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits.
“Moreover, older adults should be educated about the importance of specific aspects of dental hygiene such as the use of fluoride toothpaste and mouth rinses, denture care and brushing techniques.”
Lazenby says prioritising oral care will help ensure that seniors enjoy not only better dental health, but also a higher quality of life.
“It is a responsibility that falls on all of us to promote awareness, provide support, and advocate for the well-being of our aging population. After all, a healthy mouth is a gateway to a healthier life.”
