Speed cameras set to switch on

Ready for your close-up – NZTA staff are gearing up for December.

Drivers beware – two years after they were installed, the new average speed cameras on Matakana Road are being activated by the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) next month.

NZTA said last week that the cameras between 297 and 789 Matakana Road were currently being tested and from Monday, December 1, it would start issuing fines to motorists driving above the 80km/h limit.

“If your average speed is over the speed limit – in other words, if you’ve travelled between the cameras too quickly – expect to be fined,” a spokesperson warned.

“We’re installing signs before the camera area so you know when they’re ahead, giving you time to check you’re travelling at a legal speed.”

The new cameras on Matakana Road are the first of seven pairs that NZTA is planning to install across Auckland, and 17 across New Zealand.

“Our aim is to reduce the number of people travelling over the speed limit and lessen the likelihood of a serious or fatal crash,” NZTA added.

“Average speed safety cameras are widely used overseas. They’re proven to reduce deaths and serious injuries, and we’re using them on roads where people are at risk of being killed or seriously injured in crashes if they’re speeding.”
