Stolen war medals returned but thief still wanted

Patrick Conlon has been reunited with his grandfather’s WW1 medals.

World War One medals stolen from the mailbox of a veteran’s grandson in Whangaripo earlier this month have been found and returned to their rightful owner, Patrick Conlon.

The medals were awarded to Conlon’s grandfather, Elmer James Conlon.

Police were contacted by a Wellsford War Memorial Library staff member who said the medals had been located in their returns bin.

Senior Sergeant Damian Lawn says the police fingerprinted the medals before returning them to Conlon and are continuing with their enquiries.

Anyone with further information about the theft is asked to contact the police by dialling 105 and using the reference number 250709/8286.
