Students stitch together network of support

Students spend months developing sewing and garment-making skills through the project.
Awhi Shed will distribute the clothing and donated goods through its support network across Auckland.

The textiles department at Mahurangi College is running a clothing donation campaign, with students making garments for people in need.

The students are also collecting donations such as non-perishable food items, baked goods, blankets and linen, toiletries, warm clothing and other winter essentials.

The project involves around 50 Year 11 students and is run in partnership with Awhi Shed, a west Auckland organisation that supports homeless people and families escaping domestic violence and abuse.

Teacher-in-charge Abbie Thalari says this is the fourth year the textiles department has carried out a large-scale charity project. What began as a simple idea to use students’ skills to help others has grown into one of the school’s most meaningful initiatives.

“Every student will make at least a hoodie and a pair of sweatpants, along with additional garments for babies, children and teenagers,” she says.

“This year our clothing ranges in size from babies to 16 year olds. Having Awhi Shed come to Mahurangi College and hosting the event here allows us to grow the project and involve the wider community.”

Thalari says the initiative combines education and service. It helps people in need and builds awareness among students that helping others depends on individual action.

“Projects like this are often very emotional for students. They see that making a difference is not always about donating money. Sometimes it is about using the skills you already have to improve someone else’s day.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation, can leave goods at the Mahurangi College office, labelled for Abbie Thalari – T4. Deadline is Monday June 29.
