Congratulations to Whangateau’s Hugh McKergow, who is this week’s recipient of a gift basket from Chocolate Brown. Hugh was nominated by Whangateau resident Audrey Sharp, who wrote…
A big thank-you to Hugh McKergow who has been actively involved in our Whangateau and wider community since coming to the district in the 1950s. For 19 years he has been the chair of the Whangateau Ratepayers and Residents Association and the Big Omaha Wharf Restoration Society.
For the past three years he has clocked up over 3000km by ensuring every day that doggie-do bags are in the containers at the Whangateau Reserve for dog walkers.
He has removed graffiti and rubbish at the Big Omaha Wharf, helped with painting the wharf, as well as the hall, and cared for the local environment by planting native trees along Aston Road, 50 years ago and in recent times between Ashton and Birdsall Roads.
Being over 80 he cannot be as active as he was, but the Whangateau community appreciates all he has contributed for such a long time.
