Teeing off for local youth charity

Last year’s lockdown meant Youth In Transition (YIT) had to postpone its Golf Fore Life Charity Tournament, originally scheduled for October.

It is able to take place under the government’s Covid-19 red traffic light setting, and has been rescheduled for February 24 at Gulf Harbour Country Club.

YIT, which supports youth mental health in the area, is now looking for teams and sponsors to join them for a fun day on the green at Gulf Harbour Country Club.

Teams of three can sign up for the charity tournament, which involves playing 18 holes, with on-course activities and competitions. A pre-game barbecue and post-game buffet are included in the entry fee of $595 per team.

An auction follows, with signed sports items including All Blacks jerseys, and Ryan Fox gloves and cap, plus a day’s fishing charter for four and an overnight stay for four at Wairakei Golf Course & Sanctuary including helicopter transport from Auckland.

Youth In Transition has been very successful at supporting young people in the area since 2014.

Caitlin Watson is helping to organise the event. She says the demand for Youth in Transition’s mental health services has never been higher, with young people finding the lockdowns and restrictions particularly challenging.

“There has been a 50 percent increase in clients over the past five months, with no increase in staff,” Caitlin says. “And unfortunately we are having to turn many young people away due to lack of resources, which is heart breakin”

She says while a small number of counselling sessions are paid for by clients and their families, the vast majority – 97 percent – are provided at no cost to the client.

“This is because our aim is to deliver support to any client that comes to us, regardless of their financial situation. We don’t want money to be a barrier to young people getting the support they need when they so desperately need it.”

As well as teams of players, YIT is also looking for sponsors for the golf tournament.
