Wellsford Golf Club recently hosted the first round of a new Futures Junior Golf Shield Series.

The Futures series is about encouraging young people to learn the game of golf at their own pace and meet new friends, and it provides opportunities for young people and families to learn and play together.

Teams from Wellsford, Warkworth, Omaha and Mangawhai competed, with players ranging in age from eight to 16 years.

The format allowed for all types of golfers, girls and boys, beginners and experienced players, with teams of four playing matchplay against each other.

The Warkworth team took the shield in a closely fought battle.

Sponsors SCE Stone & Design and the Wellsford Golf Club were thanked for their support, as well as Martin Worthington for setting the shield series in motion.

The teams are looking forward to the next shield matches at Mangawhai in term two.
